Still in first, working for the playoffs
Well, even though it has been a while since my last entry, we are still in first place, so that is a really good thing! We have a great team and we are playing well, but we are only 4½ in front of the Twins, so we need to grind it out the rest of the way. We play both teams a bunch down the stretch, so it should be an exciting playoff race. Hopefully, not too exciting! It would be nice if we can gain some ground these next few weeks, so that we put some more space between us.
I am flattered by the comments that all of you have left. Let me know if anyone has any questions. I don’t lead a very exciting life off the field, for the most part, so I never really have too much to blog about. Questions would be helpful!
One thing that I have been doing while I am not at the field is playing golf. Fishing and golf are my two favorite hobbies and I enjoy doing both as much as I can. One of the many benefits of being a starting pitcher is that you know your rotation spot. I have a pretty good routine in between starts. I get my work in before each game so that I continue to build and maintain strength this late in the season. I usually get to the park at about 1:30 p.m., so that leaves the mornings in between starts open to try to get better at a very frustrating game.
My handicap is coming down, but I have tortured myself by playing some very tough courses. I mentioned in my last entry that it is exciting for me to see different ballparks all over the country. It is equally as exciting to be able to play some nice courses in those areas. When we were in Atlanta, I got to play East Lake. It was unbelievable, perfectly manicured, and tough as could be. It is ranked by Golf Digest as one of the Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses. I am hoping to play all 100!

I had a quick question: Alot is made of limiting the innings for young starters (like yourself) for obvious reasons. I was wondering if you could walk us through how your training / routine has changed (or has it) as the season progressed to prepare yourself. Who’s experience do you rely on? and how do you feel? I guess specifically – how is your arm adjusting to your first full major league season?

I have been watching your career since your senior Year at the Prep and it is a pleasure to watch. I was a member of the team that brought Shep his first GNT championship. I am also gald you stood your ground with Youklis too. Not sure how many demerits that Mr. Gallo would have given for that but something tells me he is not a Red Sox fan. Anytime you are in the Baltimore area and want to play a top 100 course here let me know. We can tee it up.

I finally got to go to my first game on 8/18 when you pitched against the Mariners and I just wanted to say that it has been a blast watching you pitch for the Tigers this year! Being as young as you are it’s awesome to see you having such great success and you still seem like such a humble guy. Too many athletes become stars and let it all go to their heads. It’s great to see that you seem so grounded. I was just wondering if you played any other sports in high school and what your favorite kind of music is? rick congratulations on a great rookie season so far. i was a pitcher for Immaculata HS class of 07 and i remember playing against you over the years when our schools would meet. i just wanted to say congrats on everything and good luck in your career, your a great pitcher so go out and make NJ proud.
Just a quick question or two…
1) I’ve seen you sign before games occasionally, but what about the fans who send to you TTM. Do you send/reply back to those people, and when do you do that (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)
2) Back to that signing idea, have you ever signed anything that made you think about it? Anything from “I think they got my better side in this picture” to “you want me to sign your forehead???!!!”

I saw your catch the other day, against Cleveland. Well, let me say I saw your catchES, however, I’m referring to the catch that came directly back into your glove. It was pretty neat to see. What I like the most is how you just took it all in stride and almost acted like nothing happened. I just laughed, it was really great.
I saw you at the Henry Ford Museum, back in January, when some of the team was there, and I really enjoyed hearing what you had to say. Though, you sounded and looked like you had a bit of a cold. 🙂
I’ve had the great experience of being at games where you pitched, and I really enjoyed it. I want you to know that I’m rooting for you for Rookie of the Year!!
I wanted to make it over to ABC Warehouse… but, unfortunately, I was entertaining company. 😦 Maybe next time.

One tip I could give you, would be to stop whenever you can to sign autographs for the fans after the game. I totally and completely understand that you can’t all the time, but… I was there one night when you didn’t stop, and there were a lot of people disappointed. There are a lot of people who would really like to see you and get your autograph.
Personally, I’d really like to sit down and talk to you, and just see what it’s like to jump to the top so fast! You just seem to take it all in stride!
I hope to see you pitching again soon. Hopefully, I’ll be making it out to another game before too long.

Since you are in Michigan and enjoy golf I recommend hitting up the Birmingham golf course. Beautiful greens and nice club house! There are also some nice courses on the west side of the state where the fishing is awesome!! My family goes over there to fish every summer. Its beautiful and a nice place to get away!!
I will be throwing out the First pitch next week at the game on the 15th:) Do you have any pitching tips? I am nervous because havent been on an MLB diamond and don?t know if the distance is much further then what I am use to. Baseball is my favorite sport so I hoping I can at least make it to the plate!! Keep up the hard work and blog! I have one as well and it?s a bit weird to know people want to hear about your life! First off, your performances in the Old English D are really fun to watch, and your composure on the mound is very calming even the scary situations (whether or not you’re calm on the inside, you appear that way).
I have a younger brother who breathes/sleeps baseball, and he just started high school. I was wondering when you you started HS, what sort of bball level you were at? Did you or your family know from that point that you were going to be in the majors?
P.S. Even though it was like 10 years ago, I have to say, the Youkilis incident really made you a Michigan favorite!
Rick, have you ever used kettlebells in your workout routine? Takes a little bit to get used to the movements, but I could see how they would work for a pitcher.

You are just so fun to watch. i was wondering do you ever get angry or frustrated that you cant be with your family or friends whenever i want? i mean i know during my sports seasons im always so angry because my friends are out doing fun stuff and im stuck at practice or at a game. The first time I saw you on the television, I’m not gonna lie I thought you were a total hottie! =) I still do, but my point is, as the season went on I was completely impressed by your talent. The way you keep your composure on the mound in tough situations make you look like a veteran, and like I’ve heard people say before..sometimes I forget that you’re only 20. Against the twins today…you owned it. You were absolutely remarkable, and I think skipper pulled you out too soon. Awesome job today Rick =]. You have an AMAZING career ahead of you no doubt. I only got the chance to come to one game this year, but I repped’ a #48 replica jersey, and I was so bummed that I didn’t get it signed. I see that it’s been quite a while since your last update, but I just wanted to say that your last 3 starts have been good, so it seems like you are returning to form after a rough start to the season. You had a nice start against the Dodgers Sunday and the same can be said about the start prior to that against the White Sox, all things considered. Not to mention what you did when you faced the Yankees. Keep it up.

I see that it’s been quite a while since your last update, but I just wanted to say that your last 3 starts have been good, so it seems like you are returning to form after a rough start to the season. You had a nice start against the Dodgers Sunday and the same can be said about the start prior to that against the White Sox, all things considered. Not to mention what you did when you faced the Yankees. Keep it up.

I’ve always been a baseball fan, but I really fell in love when I was visiting family in Detroit last year & saw you pitching. I went to your last game vs. Cleveland today (my home town) and I was proud to be the outcast rooting for you & the Tigers. Anyways, I was being a little obnoxious since I was celebrating my 18th birthday, and go figure I was sitting next to one of your cousins ! You sound like a pretty cool guy 🙂 .
