Still in first, working for the playoffs

Well, even though it has been a while since my last entry, we are still in first place, so that is a really good thing! We have a great team and we are playing well, but we are only 4½ in front of the Twins, so we need to grind it out the rest of the way. We play both teams a bunch down the stretch, so it should be an exciting playoff race. Hopefully, not too exciting!  It would be nice if we can gain some ground these next few weeks, so that we put some more space between us.

I am flattered by the comments that all of you have left. Let me know if anyone has any questions. I don’t lead a very exciting life off the field, for the most part, so I never really have too much to blog about. Questions would be helpful!

One thing that I have been doing while I am not at the field is playing golf.  Fishing and golf are my two favorite hobbies and I enjoy doing both as much as I can. One of the many benefits of being a starting pitcher is that you know your rotation spot. I have a pretty good routine in between starts. I get my work in before each game so that I continue to build and maintain strength this late in the season. I usually get to the park at about 1:30 p.m., so that leaves the mornings in between starts open to try to get better at a very frustrating game.

My handicap is coming down, but I have tortured myself by playing some very tough courses. I mentioned in my last entry that it is exciting for me to see different ballparks all over the country. It is equally as exciting to be able to play some nice courses in those areas. When we were in Atlanta, I got to play East Lake. It was unbelievable, perfectly manicured, and tough as could be. It is ranked by Golf Digest as one of the Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses.  I am hoping to play all 100!

    Great game last night!

I had a quick question: Alot is made of limiting the innings for young starters (like yourself) for obvious reasons. I was wondering if you could walk us through how your training / routine has changed (or has it) as the season progressed to prepare yourself. Who’s experience do you rely on? and how do you feel? I guess specifically – how is your arm adjusting to your first full major league season?

    Thanks for answering!

Rick, you are easily a lock for rookie of the year. I root for you every start. So I was wondering where did go in Vermont to go fishing. I live in Vermont and was wondering if you would go there offseason again. Good job so far in the season and hope you make the playoffs.

Rick, my entire family and I really enjoy watching you pitch. Glad to see you continuing to blog. As far as questions….being a female about your age, I was wondering how you feel about all the attention directed your way by female fans? Also, what is your relationship like with Justin Verlander? Good luck the rest of the season!!

    Rick,

I have been watching your career since your senior Year at the Prep and it is a pleasure to watch. I was a member of the team that brought Shep his first GNT championship. I am also gald you stood your ground with Youklis too. Not sure how many demerits that Mr. Gallo would have given for that but something tells me he is not a Red Sox fan. Anytime you are in the Baltimore area and want to play a top 100 course here let me know. We can tee it up.

Rick, im a huge fan. i watch every, single Tigers game. i went to the Rays game on Friday, i was over by third base, and i have got to say, you did incredible. 🙂
i wasnt sure what pitcher i was going to see in that game, but im glad it was you. i have wanted to go to a game you were pitching in since you made it on the roster. you should deffintely win rookie of the year, im rooting for you. im hoping the Tigers make it to the playoffs this year, that would be amazing if i could go and see a playoff game! i have a few questions for you..

1.) What is it like to have Ryan Perry as a roomate?
2.) Can you please teach me how to play golf? haha, i have tried once or twice, and i wasnt the best at it.
3.) What was going through your mind when you saw Youkilis charging towards you?
4.) Who did you look up to as a pitcher growing up?
5.) Who are some of your better friends on the team?

if you answer the questions, thank you. best of luck for the rest of the season. 🙂

    Mr. Porcello,

I got to attend my first ball games this year when you guys played the Angels on 8/24 and 8/25. I grew up in Detroit and after I got hired by the Border Patrol, I moved to San Diego. Those were great games. I just wanted to thank you again for signing my baseball before the game on 8/24. Take care.

Hey Rick! I just met you at ABC Warehouse. Thanks for the autograph! My questions are… what is you favorite TV show and your favorite movie, and do you have a facebook, myspace, or twitter. Thanks and congratulations on your sucess so far and good luck the rest of the season!

  9. downtownbrown24@hotmail.com

    Rick-
I finally got to go to my first game on 8/18 when you pitched against the Mariners and I just wanted to say that it has been a blast watching you pitch for the Tigers this year! Being as young as you are it’s awesome to see you having such great success and you still seem like such a humble guy. Too many athletes become stars and let it all go to their heads. It’s great to see that you seem so grounded. I was just wondering if you played any other sports in high school and what your favorite kind of music is? Also what is your favorite moment of the season so far? Good luck with the rest of the season! Go Tigers!

    Rick,

Congratulations on all your success this year! I’m sure there is much more to come! I know some players have superstitions or certain things they absolutely have to do before a game; I was wondering if you have any superstitions?

Thanks and good luck with the rest of your season!

    Hi Rick!
I just met you at ABC Warehouse last night and have been smiling ever since! Thanks again for the autograph! 🙂 I also got to go to the game you pitched against the Mariners on 8/24. Great job. You’ve been stellar this year and I enjoy watching you pitch. So I do have some questions for you:
    1) How do you think Alex Avila’s been doing since he was brought up?
    2) What’s been your favorite (and least favorite) road ballpark you’ve visited?
    3) Are you enjoying you’re first major league season?
Thanks again for the autograph. Good luck in your next start and your future ones too!

    Hi Rick,
I am a huge fan of you’rs. 🙂 My friends and I have a MySpace fan page dedicated to you, The Official Rick Porcello Fan Page. http://myspace.com/therickporcellofanpage48 . We were wondering, if at a time that was convenient for you and you had an extra few minutes, if you could possibly do a FAQ with us for it. If not, we understand, you are very busy. Good luck and we are glad you’re a Tiger.

    Rick,
Wow !! What a great pitcher you are !! I’m a big fan ! Are you aware that you have created a female fan base at Comerica Park? I ask that because I’m always hearing girls (including me) saying you are so cute. Does it freak you out ?? When you go fishing do you go with any of the other players and if you do who are they ? What type of music do you listen to ?? Also do you have a myspace or any other type of social network page ??
So happy your a tiger !

    Sincerely,
    Alessa

have a great rest of the season!!

    Hey Rick!
Sorry some words got beeped out of my comment on your last entry, haha.
But, I’ll hit you up on those questions.
    1) I know you live in NJ during the post season, but what city do you live in during the season?
    2) Who do you prefer to catch for you, Laird or Avila?
    3) Doesn’t it bother you how all the reporters and people refer to you as “the kid”?

Just as I type this, some guy on ESPN is raving about you!! He should, though. You’re the youngest player in the MLB but you’re better than the majority of them. 🙂

P.S. Every female in Southeastern MI thinks you’re gorgeous, including me. I hope you can get your handicap up. 🙂

rick congratulations on a great rookie season so far. i was a pitcher for Immaculata HS class of 07 and i remember playing against you over the years when our schools would meet. i just wanted to say congrats on everything and good luck in your career, your a great pitcher so go out and make NJ proud.

Just a quick question or two…

    1) I’ve seen you sign before games occasionally, but what about the fans who send to you TTM. Do you send/reply back to those people, and when do you do that (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)

    2) Back to that signing idea, have you ever signed anything that made you think about it? Anything from “I think they got my better side in this picture” to “you want me to sign your forehead???!!!”

    Thanks for blogging,
    Zack from Port Huron, MI

    Rick:
Nice catch the other night. Everybody at school is incredibly proud of you. You are converting some hard core Yankee and Met fans into Tiger fans. Good luck with the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Stop by school after the season is over. Tell Jake I still have the bat!

  21. detroit_tigers_chica101@yahoo.com

Hey Rick! I Just wanted to say that you did amazing pitching against the Rays last Friday, I was there and I was so glad that you pitched. I thought for sure that the game was going to be postponed because of the rain, but I’m glad it wasn’t! =) I just have a quick question for you: What inspired you to become a professional baseball player? Good luck with the rest of the season, I’m sure you’ll do great!
    -Kayla =)

  22. justafriend@live.com

    Rick,

I saw your catch the other day, against Cleveland. Well, let me say I saw your catchES, however, I’m referring to the catch that came directly back into your glove. It was pretty neat to see. What I like the most is how you just took it all in stride and almost acted like nothing happened. I just laughed, it was really great.

I saw you at the Henry Ford Museum, back in January, when some of the team was there, and I really enjoyed hearing what you had to say. Though, you sounded and looked like you had a bit of a cold. 🙂

I’ve had the great experience of being at games where you pitched, and I really enjoyed it. I want you to know that I’m rooting for you for Rookie of the Year!!

I wanted to make it over to ABC Warehouse… but, unfortunately, I was entertaining company. 😦 Maybe next time.

I hope that perhaps I can still meet you yet, and perhaps, get your autograph!

One tip I could give you, would be to stop whenever you can to sign autographs for the fans after the game. I totally and completely understand that you can’t all the time, but… I was there one night when you didn’t stop, and there were a lot of people disappointed. There are a lot of people who would really like to see you and get your autograph.

Personally, I’d really like to sit down and talk to you, and just see what it’s like to jump to the top so fast! You just seem to take it all in stride!

I hope to see you pitching again soon. Hopefully, I’ll be making it out to another game before too long.

    -Bekah

    Rick-
First i want to say, i have been a fan of yours since Tigerfest 2 years ago when you first got signed. I had just broken my foot and standing in those lines were killer but for your autograph, it was worth it. I saw you at ABC Warehouse the other day too. thanks for the autograph!
    🙂
    heres my question-
is it weird having so many people show up for something, like the signing knowing there all there to see you?

Rick, Congratulations on your 12th win. I keep up with your season through this site. Everyone here at BRMS is really proud of you. Someday hope to get your autograph for my grandson. Keep up the good work and hope to see you in the play-offs.

    heyy rick!
first of all i want you to know that your a really good pitcher! and i love to watch you and the rest of the team play! i was going to go to ABC warehouse to meet you but i had volleyball andd softball:( i actualy wrote you fan mail haha but i dont know if you actually get the letters or not…
i like to fish too and im actually kind of good i dont know why but i always catch something lol! and i go out golfing with some of my family but im horible at it so i just drive the cart for them most of the time! haha. im comeing to your game on sep. 12th but my dad said its probally not your turn to pitch:(
so i guess my questions are…
-when you were in high school did you have to give up alot of time hanging out with friends for baseball? because i have to for softball and it gets hard not being with your close friends all the time…

-when its your game to pitch what do you do mentally to prepare for the game?

-was there ever a time durring your fist year in the MLB that you got homesick??

well thats all i have for you! good luckk the rest of your season:)

  28. andieliles11

    hey rick : )
i was just wondering whats the biggest challenge you have pitching as a rookie??
i have to add that your quite a looker lol
does it bother you that you have all these chicks after ya or do you just not pay a lot of attention to it?
id love to hear from u : )

    Hey there,
Since you are in Michigan and enjoy golf I recommend hitting up the Birmingham golf course. Beautiful greens and nice club house! There are also some nice courses on the west side of the state where the fishing is awesome!! My family goes over there to fish every summer. Its beautiful and a nice place to get away!!
I will be throwing out the First pitch next week at the game on the 15th:) Do you have any pitching tips? I am nervous because havent been on an MLB diamond and don?t know if the distance is much further then what I am use to. Baseball is my favorite sport so I hoping I can at least make it to the plate!! Keep up the hard work and blog! I have one as well and it?s a bit weird to know people want to hear about your life! Haha See ya from the mound:)

P.S What has been your favorite part about Detroit?

    Keep it real Dude,

    Rick,

You have been a dream for the Tigers all season long. My husband and I have watched you pitch all season. Tigers games have been a lot more fun with you on the team. Watching you pitch all season and the hits you got in inner league play have been great moments this year.

    1. What veterans do you rely on during the season?
    2. Why number 48?
    3. Who is your biggest supporter?

Thank you for being such a normal guy and not a big shot at all the Angels games this season. The BIG TIGERS FANS out here on the West Coast appreciate how kind you were to us. I appreciate the autographs and the pictures that you took with us and all the kids at the games.

Okay, I have never read a blog before this, much less commented on one, so I’m winging it…

    Mr. Porcello,
First off, your performances in the Old English D are really fun to watch, and your composure on the mound is very calming even the scary situations (whether or not you’re calm on the inside, you appear that way).

I have a younger brother who breathes/sleeps baseball, and he just started high school. I was wondering when you you started HS, what sort of bball level you were at? Did you or your family know from that point that you were going to be in the majors?

P.S. Even though it was like 10 years ago, I have to say, the Youkilis incident really made you a Michigan favorite!

  32. martypwb

Rick, have you ever used kettlebells in your workout routine? Takes a little bit to get used to the movements, but I could see how they would work for a pitcher.

    Go Tigers.

BTW I hope you get a chance to pitch in the playoffs at Yankee Stadium so I can hear the deafening silence you create.

  33. jameykorin@aol.com

Rick you are my favorite pitcher for the Tigers, i love coming to the games but i wont come unless you are pitching that night. You are just so fun to watch. i was wondering do you ever get angry or frustrated that you cant be with your family or friends whenever i want? i mean i know during my sports seasons im always so angry because my friends are out doing fun stuff and im stuck at practice or at a game. When you were young did you ever dream about being a Tiger. ha well i just thought i would leave you a little something and i hope you have an amazing rest of the season. Just keep doing what your doing and you will do magnifecent.
    Love your biggestt fan

    Rick,

Just curious how pitching in the cold effects you. The further we get into October the more ridiculous the weather gets around here.

    Hey Rick!
My name is Stephen Porcello. I’m from South Windsor, CT. A few years ago I saw your name in a Sports Illustrated as projected to be a top draft pick. I was shocked to see a star baseball player who shared a name with me! Immediately you became my favorite player. My dad and I followed you through A ball last year and were hoping you would get promoted to AA in time to play the New Britain Rock Cats in CT, so we could see you play. We thought about going to Fenway to watch you pitch vs. the Red Sox but we couldn’t get tickets. I’m a diehard Yankees fan but if you pitch vs. the Yanks in the ALDS I’ll be rooting for you to do well. I would love to hear from you again, especially considering you are a fellow Porcello!
    Thanks Steve Porcello

    Hey Rick =)
My name’s Candace, and I’m 18 years old. The first time I saw you on the television, I’m not gonna lie I thought you were a total hottie! =) I still do, but my point is, as the season went on I was completely impressed by your talent. The way you keep your composure on the mound in tough situations make you look like a veteran, and like I’ve heard people say before..sometimes I forget that you’re only 20. Against the twins today…you owned it. You were absolutely remarkable, and I think skipper pulled you out too soon. Awesome job today Rick =]. You have an AMAZING career ahead of you no doubt. I only got the chance to come to one game this year, but I repped’ a #48 replica jersey, and I was so bummed that I didn’t get it signed. I guess there’s always next year though =) I’d do anything to meet you! You’ll always be my favorite tiger! =)

    Love Always,
    Candace Salliotte

  39. brooke_anderson27@yahoo.com

Nice job last night! Even though the tigers didn’t win I’m proud that I decided you were my favorite pitcher when I first heard about you and saw you pitch. No matter what happens next year know that you’ll always have fans that support you like me for example not to sound arrogant or anything. 🙂

  40. tigerschica09

Oh my gosh, I’m soooo sorry Rick.
Well, we support you and stuff for next year.
Even though our team wasn’t the best this year the fans always will be. 🙂
Have a great offseason back in NJ!!!

    hey rick
i met you at the signing at abc warehouse on the 3rd and i didnt get to tell you how happy i was u took a picture with me
one of the best moments of my life lol and its a pretty great picture lol
so anyways thanks for the autograph and picture u seem like a really great guy.
cant wait to watch you next year 😉

  42. chloelovesporcello

heyy rick! i just want to say goood season!! u did amazing. that last game was soo intense. i loved watching you this year!! can’t wait for it to start again! lol i reallyy hope you write some blogs durring your off season and free time. they are fun to read. and just to let you know i am nott the kind of girl that wants to get to know you because you are in the MLB and goodlooking. haha. you are just fun to learn and read about and you seem like a really nice guy!!
tell cabrera we still love him and wish him the best of luck!

  43. 7mmmag@chartermi.net

    Rick,
Thanks for the amazing season! My family and I live in Northern Michigan and went to the August 16 game – you were scheduled to be on the mound – but some bad decisions had you watching the game like us. I was so disappointed but did enjoy the game. You have stated that you enjoy golf – try some of Northern Michigan’s golf courses! Beautiful and challenging! We will be excited for the ’10 season and wish the Tigers all the best!

  44. tenten25

    Rick,

Hello again. Today’s my birthday and I just got your shirt! I’m so excited to wear it. I just wanted to say that you were a great addition to the Tigers. Laird and Avila couldn’t praise you enough for your poise throughout this grueling year. That takedown of Youkillis proved that you aren’t just some shy rookie 2 years out of high school, you are a man ready for the MLB. I really enjoyed watching you pitch. Congrats on leading all of the rookies in the win column. You should definately be Rookie of the Year. But even if you aren’t, you’re still mine! You pitched a great season.

  45. tigerluver

    Yo Rick!
I know I’m a little late in this blog, but wow! You are awesosme! great job on the tie breaker game even though you guys lost! i hope you stay with the tigers because so far, the team is kind of falling apart, but at the same time, building it back up. when curtis granderson went to the yankees, i was really angry, but then i realized “well, at least porcello is still there!” me and my friend think you are hot… she thinks she is going to marry you. It’s kind of funny! most of my friends think that since I’m a girl, i shouldn’t watch or even like baseball, but i think it is cool. you are my favorite pitcher, verlander is my second. you pitched a great season, and i am looking forward to another great season. please, oh please have a wonderful season. I hope you and the team make it to the top!

(tell ordonez, cabrera, verlander, and everyone else i said hi!)

  46. tigerluver

    rick,
i have a few questions for you
    1. why the number 48
    2. do people tell you you’re hot?
    3. did you like baseball when you were a kid?

    thanks!

    Keeghan
    Iowa

    Rick,

Great to meet you last weekend at Tigerfest. I was in the first batch to come through and see you. You have by far exceeded all of our expectations and I look forward to watching you grow as a pitcher in the future! I hear you are an outdoorsman, do you hunt as well as fish? What do you prefer to fish or hunt for? Are you a bass, walleye or what kind of fisherman? Thanks for being here we really appreciate you in the “D” and good luck this year! Also good luck fishing too! Maybe I’ll see ya out on the lakes this summer (we have great fishing here in Michigan)!
    thanks
    Rick (I’m Rick also)

    Rick,

    Hey Rick,
First of all, I am excited for this season to start, and second of all you need to update your blog for waiting fans like me. 🙂 My Grandma just bought me a shirt with your name on in so I’ll be cheering for ya in the crowds this summer. Have a great season!

    rick,
1st of all, I’m not a “hottie.” I’ve lived in NJ all my life and have been a Tiger fan for 75 years. Reading all the previous messages, I kind of feel out of place being that I go back to 1934-35 (championship yrs) to Greenberg and Gehringer. What makes you so special to me is that I live in Randolph, NJ – about 10 miles from Chester and the way that you are pitching, you could be my favorite Tiger of all time. Kaline holds that position at the moment. I’ve got many wonderful memories of the many Tiger-Yankee games I had seen at Yankee Stadium. I’m looking forward to Detroit’s visit to NY this summer. I sure would like to see and meet you. Anyway, have a great year!!! (First letter I have ever written to a sports figure)

    rick,
1st of all, I’m not a “hottie.” I’ve lived in NJ all my life and have been a Tiger fan for 75 years. Reading all the previous messages, I kind of feel out of place being that I go back to 1934-35 (championship yrs) to Greenberg and Gehringer. Hi Rick,
I think you should update your blog, because I’d like to know how your feeling after beating up on the yankees tuesday afternoon. that was fun to watch! I’m 16, and a huge fan. You and Ryan Perry are my favorite tigers, and I have a shirt with your name on it. I’m planning on seeing you pitch later this summer, so here’s to a good season. (:
    Sammie
p.s. how can I get an autograph?! (:

    Hi again,
I said tuesday, but I meant wednesday, during the double header. ha oops! and I should probably add that I, too, think you are pretty hot. is it weird having girls say that all the time? Just wondering!

    Rick,
I see that it’s been quite a while since your last update, but I just wanted to say that your last 3 starts have been good, so it seems like you are returning to form after a rough start to the season. You had a nice start against the Dodgers Sunday and the same can be said about the start prior to that against the White Sox, all things considered. Not to mention what you did when you faced the Yankees. Keep it up.

    Rick !
I’ve always been a baseball fan, but I really fell in love when I was visiting family in Detroit last year & saw you pitching. I went to your last game vs. Cleveland today (my home town) and I was proud to be the outcast rooting for you & the Tigers. Anyways, I was being a little obnoxious since I was celebrating my 18th birthday, and go figure I was sitting next to one of your cousins ! You sound like a pretty cool guy 🙂 . I can’t wait to come to Detroit and see you in action, see you soon. – lexa
